Sardine dedicated to the academic and cultural tradition of the academic ‘tuna’. Composed of typical elements such as costumes, traditional instruments, and the Portuguese pavement that hosts this unique event. This Sardine contains within itself the Portuguese student soul and its pride. This is a sardine with "tuna" flavour.
What is the Portuguese ‘tuna’ ?
The Portuguese ‘tuna’ tradition refers, not to the fish, but to a traditional musical group composed by university students. These groups, often seen in big academic cities like Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto, are a vibrant part of student culture. Members are seen performing in traditional academic attire (usually meaning black cloaks and suits) with their respective instruments: guitars, mandolins, violas, tambourines, and others.
In this project I offer a comical take that plays on the double meaning of the word ‘tuna’ by using its portuguese meaning to honour another portuguese fish - the sardine.
